Middle School Education (Sixth – Eighth Grades)

Saint Mary’s Middle School Education program closely follows the Consensus Curriculum established by the Catholic Diocese of Richmond.
Sixth Grade
Sixth graders explore the Old Testament in Religion, focusing on Genesis, the prophets, and wisdom books. In Language Arts, they develop reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary skills across fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama. Math emphasizes fractions, decimals, percent’s, geometry, and pre-algebra concepts. Science covers life and environmental studies including ecology, cells, anatomy, and dissections. Social Studies focuses on U.S. History from 1865 through World War I, including Reconstruction, westward expansion, and industrialization. Students also participate in Marine Biology using the school’s living shoreline. Enrichment includes Spanish, Music, Fine Arts, Technology, Library, and Physical Education.
Seventh Grade
Seventh grade Religion studies the New Testament, morality, Catholic social teaching, and the life of Christ. Language Arts builds critical thinking through literature, writing, and vocabulary expansion. Math includes Pre-Algebra or Algebra with emphasis on equations, graphing, and problem-solving. Physical Science introduces matter, energy, chemistry, and electricity. Social Studies continues U.S. History from World War I to the present, covering world wars, social change, the Cold War, and modern issues. Students also study Marine Biology and enjoy a full enrichment program in Spanish, Music, Fine Arts, Technology, Library, and Physical Education.
Eighth Grade
Eighth grade prepares students for high school. Religion centers on Church History, sacraments, tradition, and moral principles. Language Arts integrates advanced literature, grammar, and writing, with opportunities for novel studies, public speaking, and a Drama Production. Math includes Algebra I or Geometry at the high school level, introducing polynomials, quadratic equations, trigonometry, and advanced geometry. Earth Science (high school level) covers oceanography, geology, astronomy, meteorology, and environmental science. Social Studies combines Civics—government, citizenship, and economics—with World History, from ancient civilizations through the Renaissance and Reformation. Students continue with Marine Biology and enrichment in Spanish, Music, Fine Arts, Technology, Library, and Physical Education.
